Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
  • 0.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 2.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest (about 1 orange)

Wet Ingredients

  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter (frozen)
  • 0.5 cups heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Main Ingredients

  • 1 heaping cup frozen cranberries

Glaze

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 2-3 Tablespoons fresh orange juice

Optional Topping

  • 1 Tablespoon heavy cream
  • to taste coarse sugar

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest together in a large bowl. Grate the frozen butter and add it to the flour mixture, combining until pea-sized crumbs form. Refrigerate.
  • Whisk ½ cup heavy cream, the egg, and vanilla extract together in a small bowl. Drizzle it over the flour mixture, add cranberries, and mix until moistened.
  • Pour onto a floured surface, work dough into a ball. Press into an 8-inch disc and cut into 8 wedges.
  • Brush scones with remaining heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  • Refrigerate scones for at least 15 minutes while preheating the oven to 400°F (204°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange scones on the sheet 2-3 inches apart.
  • Bake for 22-25 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool for a few minutes.
  • Prepare the glaze by whisking confectioners’ sugar with orange juice. Drizzle over cooled scones.

Notes

Freeze scone dough before baking for best results. Use frozen cranberries for optimal texture. Prepare overnight by refrigerating the shaped scones.
